At age seven, Canadian pianist Anastasia Rizikov made her orchestral debut performing Polunin’s Concertino in A minor with the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, conducted by Mykola Diadiura. Now 14, Anastasia is showing signs of being “one to watch”.  She is currently performing solo concerts in major US cities such as Detroit, Chicago, Binghamton, New York, and Washington.

Anastasia has recently performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nan Washburn. She has also made her debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Shalom Bard. In 2012, she gave two performances of E. Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor: one with National Academy Orchestra of Canada conducted by Boris Brott in Burlington, Ontario and the other with the Baleares Symphony Orchestra conducted by Salvador Brotons in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Prior to these endeavors, Anastasia has given a number of remarkable performances including two renditions of Kabalevsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3. One with the International Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Debbaut in Sarnia, Ontario, and one in Port Huron, Michigan. In 2010, Anastasia performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor as guest soloist with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra in Michigan conducted by Nan Washburn.

Anastasia has won first prize in many international competitions including the Rotary International Piano Competition in Spain, the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition in the USA which lead to a Carnegie Hall debut, and the Vladimir Horowitz International Young Pianists Competition in the Ukraine to name a few. Nationally, Anastasia won first place in both the Canadian Music Competition and the Canadian Chopin Competition.

Anastasia studies with award-winning Master of Music Maia Spis, at the Nadia Music Academy in Toronto. She has played in master classes for Anatoly Ryabov (Conservatory of Moscow), Oxana Yablonskaya (Juilliard School of Music), and has worked with Olga Kern (winner of the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition). In addition to her passion for the piano, she loves reading, animals, shopping, and treasures her friendships.

Anastasia a remporté le premier de nombreux concours internationaux, y compris le concours international de piano « Rotary » en Espagne, le concours international de piano Bradshaw & Buono aux États-Unis qui conduit un début à la salle « Carnegie Hall »,  et le concours international des jeunes pianistes Vladimir Horowitz en Ukraine pour en nommer quelques-uns. Au niveau national, Anastasia a remporté la première place lors du concours de musique du Canada et le concours canadien de Chopin.

Anastasia étudie avec le très renommé maître de musique Maia Spis à l’académie de musique Nadia de Toronto. Taking their name from St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, the Cecilia String Quartet (CSQ) continues to win praise following their First Prize at the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC). “With a stunning spirit of creativity that consistently celebrated risk-taking and discovery, the Cecilia Quartet impressed the distinguished jury above all others,” said the competition’s Executive Director, Barry Shiffman, when announcing the winners.

Formed while its members were students at the University of Toronto, the CSQ is a former prize-winner at competitions in Bordeaux (2010) and Osaka (2008). European tours have taken the four artists to the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal (Amsterdam), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), as well as venues in Italy and Belgium. Their concert recordings have been broadcast on more than a dozen international public radio networks.

Highly committed to education and community engagement, the CSQ have held teaching positions at the Austin Chamber Music Festival (Texas), San Diego State University (California), McGill University (Québec), QuartetFest at Wilfrid Laurier University (Ontario), and the Indiana Summer String Academy. They have presented educational programs for elementary and high schools across Canada, the USA, Italy, and France. The CSQ is currently Ensemble in Residence at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, a position that has been made possible by a generous gift from BMO Financial Group.

Min-Jeong Koh plays on the ca. 1767 Joannes Baptista Guadagnini violin and Sarah Nematallah plays on the 1851 Jean Baptiste Vuillaume violin, both on loan from anonymous donors. Rachel Desoer recently won the use of the 1929 Carlo Giuseppe Oddone cello from the Canada Council for the Arts. The quartet would like to thank the donors and the Canada Council for the Arts for their generous support.

Arborant le nom de Sainte Cécile, sainte patronne de la musique, le quatuor à cordes Cecilia String Quartet (CSQ) continue d’accroitre sa renommée suite à sa victoire du premier prix en 2010 lors du concours international des quatuors à cordes de Banff (BISQC). “Grâce à un étonnant esprit de créativité qui célèbre avec constance le risque et la découverte, le quatuor Cécilia a impressionné l’éminent jury parmi tant d’autres” a dit Barry Shiffman, directeur général du concours, à l’annonce des gagnants.

Formé alors que ces membres étaient étudiants à l’université de Toronto, le CSQ est un lauréat des concours de Bordeaux (2010) et d’Osaka (2008). Les tournées européennes ont emmené les quatre artistes au Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal (Amsterdam), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), ainsi qu’à des sites en Italie et en Belgique. Les enregistrements de leurs concerts ont été diffusés sur plus d’une demi-douzaine de réseaux de radios publiques.

Extrêmement engagé envers l’éducation et la communauté, le CSQ a tenu des postes d’enseignement au festival de musique de chambre d’Austin (Texas), à l’Université de San Diego State (Californie), à l’Université McGill (Québec), au « QuartetFest » à l’université de Wilfrid Laurier (Ontario), et à l’académie de l’ « Indiana Summer String Academy ». Les membres ont présenté des programmes éducatifs aux écoles élémentaires et secondaires partout au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Italie et en France. Le CSQ est actuellement Ensemble en Résidence de la faculté de musique de l’Université de Toronto, une position qui a été possible grâce à un don généreux du Groupe BMO Financial.

Min-Jeong Koh joue le violon de Joannes Baptista Guadagnini datant de 1767 et Sarah Nematallah joue sur le violon Jean Baptiste Vuillaume de 1851, tous deux sont des prêts de donateurs anonymes. Rachel Desoer a récemment gagné, auprès du Conseil des arts du Canada,  le droit d’utilisation du violoncelle de Carlo Giuseppe Oddone de 1929. Le quatuor souhaite remercier ces donateurs et le Conseil des arts du Canada pour leur généreux soutien.

Carissa Klopoushak is quickly emerging as one of Canada’s most versatile and creative violinists. A charismatic and engaging performer, Carissa’s playing has been described as the “complete package of sensitive musicianship and effortless technique.”

Winner of the 32nd annual Eckhardt-Grammatté National Music Competition, Carissa completed a Canada-wide début recital tour with pianist Philip Chiu in 2009. Together, they have also been featured in recital at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and on the airwaves of the CBC.

Based in Montreal, Carissa performs with many chamber groups around Montreal, including Ensemble Mooncrest, who recently recorded Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Warhol Dervish, ARTefact, and Portmantô. She performs frequently with Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and has just returned to Canada from a tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Carissa is a founder of the Montreal Collective Orchestra, a conductor-less chamber orchestra where artistic direction is inclusive and democratic – in other works, collective.

Originally from Saskatoon, Carissa was working towards her bachelor’s degree at the University of Saskatchewan when she won the position of Principal Second Violin with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, a post she held for three years. Still active in the prairie music scene today, Carissa performs with Regina-based Boundary Ensemble, and is an Artistic Director of the Ritornello Chamber Music Festival, an annual event that showcases young Canadian musicians who are currently pursuing professional careers across the country and around the globe.

Carissa is the lead singer and violinist in the Ukrainian band Тут і Там. Established in 2003, the band has recorded three albums, performed at Ukrainian festivals across Canada and in Australia. They are currently working on a new album to be released in early 2014.

Carissa teaches violin and chamber music at McGill University where she has recently completed a doctorate in violin performance, focusing on the little-known violin repertoire by Ukrainian composers. When not performing, rehearsing, or traveling, Carissa can be found having coffee in one of Montreal’s many cafes.

Carissa performs on the 1869 Jean Baptiste Vuillaume violin (with Vuillaume model bow), generously on loan by the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.

Carissa Klopoushak est une des violonistes les plus polyvalentes et créatives  en pleine ascension au Canada.  Sa façon de jouer a été décrite comme étant un amalgame parfait de sens musical sensible et de technique sans efforts  avec  une présence sur scène très charismatique et engageante.

Gagnante du 32e concours annuel national de musique Eckhardt-Grammatté, Carissa a fait ses débuts  avec une tournée de récital en compagnie du pianiste Philip Chiu en 2009. Ensemble, ils ont aussi été mis en vedette lors d’un récital au festival de musique de chambre d’Ottawa et sur les ondes de Radio-Canada.

Installée à Montréal, Carissa se produit avec de nombreux groupes de musique de chambre, y compris l’ensemble « Mooncrest », « Warhol Dervish », et Portmantô. Elle se produit souvent avec l’orchestre du Centre national des arts et l’orchestre symphonique de Montréal et elle vient de terminer une tournée avec l’« Australian Chamber Orchestra ». Carissa est aussi une des membres fondatrices de l’Orchestre collectif de Montréal. L`Orchestre Collectif de Montréal est un orchestre de chambre exempt de chef, formé de jeunes musiciens innovateurs et versatiles qui apportent un vent de fraîcheur à la musique de chambre de grande envergure.

Originaire de Saskatoon, Carissa travaillait à l’obtention de son baccalauréat de l’Université de Saskatoon lorsqu’elle a obtenu la place de second violon principal au sein de l’orchestre symphonique de Saskatoon, un poste qu’elle aura gardé pendant trois ans. Toujours active sur la scène musicale des prairies, Carissa se produit en concert avec le groupe « Boundary Ensemble » de la ville de Régina, et elle  est la directrice artistique pour le festival de musique de chambre Ritornello, un événement annuel qui met en vedette les jeunes musiciens canadiens qui sont à la poursuite d’une carrière professionnelle à travers le pays et le monde.

Carissa est la chanteuse et violoniste du groupe ukrainien Тут і Там. Établi en 2003, le groupe a enregistré trois albums, s’est produit à Montréal, Toronto, aux festivals  Vegreville et Dauphine d’Ukraine et est actuellement en train de travailler sur un nouvel album qui sera lancé au début d’année 2014.

Carissa enseigne le violon et la musique de chambre à l’Université McGill, où elle vient de terminer son doctorat en violon. Sa recherche a exploré le répertoire très peu connu  pour violon des compositeurs ukrainiens.  Dans sont temps libre, Carissa aime bien se détendre avec un café dans l’un des plusieurs restaurants à Montréal.

L’instrument de Carissa est le violon Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume de 1869 (avec l’archet de modèle Vuillaume) de la banque d’instrument de musique du Conseil des arts du Canada.

Performing works composed by their founder Dinuk Wijeratne, Diomira‘s music explores Dinuk’s hugely diverse cultural influences: from the Persian poetry of Omar Khayyam and the fantastical prose of Jorge Luis Borges, to the sensuality of Flamenco and the intricate rhythms of the Indian Classical tradition.

Formed in April 2011, the trio’s critically acclaimed literary and globally-inspired program was immediately recorded by the CBC and has since enjoyed repeated nationwide broadcast, garnering audience support for a style that balances sublime music-making with virtuosity.

The ‘soul’ of Diomira’s unique sound is the accordion of Joseph Petric. An internationally renowned recording-artist hailed as “an extraordinary performer” by the Boston Globe, Petric toured with Debut Atlantic for the first time in 1990. He returns this year with Diomira as Debut Atlantic’s Encore tour. World percussionist Nick Halley is a fiery talent who moves effortlessly amongst the major drumming traditions. Sri Lankan-born Dinuk Wijeratne, with a rapidly growing reputation as a prolific creator of genre-spanning projects, leads the group with his striking compositions and remarkable invention at the piano.

As part of their Debut Atlantic tour, Diomira will engage local young creators and composers to write music for the ensemble. These works will then be performed in concert, bringing a unique element to each community performance.

“L’âme” du son unique de Diomira est l’accordéon de Joseph Petric, l’accordéoniste de renommée internationale acclamé en tant que « musicien extraordinaire » par le Boston Globe. Petric a fait sa première tournée avec Début Atlantique en 1990. Il revient cette année avec Diomira dans le cadre de la tournée Encore. Le percussionniste Nick Halley possède un talent enflammé qui se meut sans efforts parmi les traditions principales de la percussion.  Dinuk Wijeratne, originaire du Sri Lanka, avec sa réputation croissante de créateur prolifique de projets à chevauchement de genre, dirige le groupe avec ses compositions saisissantes et ses inventions remarquables au piano.

Pendant la durée de leur tournée Début Atlantique, Diomira va demander à des jeunes créateurs et compositeurs d’écrire des œuvres pour le group. Ces œuvres seront ensuite exécutées en concert, donnent un élément unique à chaque concert communautaire.

Dynamic and versatile, the Montreal-based ensemble Flûte Alors! is composed of four new-generation recorder players.  Unique in their category, the ensemble is the only professional recorder quartet in Canada.

Since its inception in 1999, the group has been following an exceptional path, quickly distinguishing themselves with the audacity of their programs and the excellence of their performances. Flûte Alors! has a natural stage presence and ability to communicate with audiences that creates a unique, engaging experience while promoting the magnificent, albeit often neglected, instrument we call the recorder.

For the past several years, Flûte Alors! has been receiving nominations and winning prizes, both nationally and internationally. They have been invited to perform in a number of music festivals including the Montreal Recorder Festival and “Concerts aux Îles du Bic.”

In 2009, Flûte Alors! received first prize in chamber music at the National Music Festival and in 2011, they released their first album, Kaléidoscope which was presented in more than 40 locations across Canada as part of their 2012/13 Jeunesses Musicales tour. Flûte Alors has also recently made its debut in the United-States thanks to an invitation to participate in the prestigious Concerts at One series held at Trinity Wall Street in New York City.

Dedicated to pushing the limits of the recorder and expanding its repertoire, Flûte Alors!’s performances encompass music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as contemporary, jazz, and pop works. The ensemble often collaborates with other performers from diverse musical backgrounds and frequently commissions works for recorder ensemble from the new generation of composers in addition to creating their own arrangements.

With their performances, Flûte Alors! embarks on an incredible voyage across the ages, revealing a bouquet of colors and sounds to audiences everywhere.

Ensemble dynamique et polyvalent, Flûte Alors! est composé de quatre flûtistes à bec de la nouvelle génération. Unique en son genre, Flûte Alors! est le seul quatuor de flûtes à bec professionnel au Canada. Depuis sa création en 1999, l’ensemble suit un parcours exceptionnel où il se distingue par l’audace de ses programmes et l’excellence de ses interprétations. Grâce à leur qualité de communicateurs, les musiciens font vivre à leur public une expérience unique, rafraîchissante tout en se faisant le promoteur de cet instrument magnifique, malheureusement méconnu et trop souvent négligé, qu’est la flûte à bec.

Depuis plusieurs années Flûte Alors! récolte prix et nominations tant au niveau national qu’international. L’ensemble est invité à se produire dans de nombreux festivals de musique (Festival Montréal Baroque, Festival Les journées de la Flûte à bec, Concerts aux Îles du Bic) et s’est produit en France et en Allemagne. En tant qu’artiste Jeunesses Musicales du Canada pour la saison 2012-2013, Flûte Alors! a présenté son concert Kaléidoscope dans près d’une quarantaine de villes à travers le Canada. L’ensemble a récemment fait ses débuts aux États-Unis suite à une invitation à se produire dans la prestigieuse série de concerts « Concerts at One » à Trinity Wall Street, New-York. C’est grâce à une subvention de la MRC Roussillon que l’ensemble a fait paraître son premier opus, KALÉIDOSCOPE, au printemps 2011.

Dédiés faire connaître le riche répertoire de la flûte à bec, Flûte Alors! présente depuis 2008 une série de concerts à Montréal lors desquels se côtoient musiques médiévale, renaissance, baroque, contemporaine, jazz et même pop ! L’ensemble commande régulièrement des œuvres à de jeunes compositeurs d’ici, collabore avec divers artistes  en plus de présenter ses propres arrangements d’œuvres choisies.

Les présentations de Flûte Alors! se révèlent un véritable voyage dans le temps et à travers les époques, un bouquet de saveurs, une palette de couleurs, un périple éclaté pour le plaisir et l’émerveillement de tous publics.

Philip Chiu has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance and sensitivity of his playing, as well as for his ability to connect with audiences. He appears regularly in concert halls and stages throughout Canada. His concerto debut in 2005 was Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto with Maestra Tania Miller, as winner of The Glenn Gould School Concerto Competition. After an extended period of near-exclusive chamber music-making, he has returned to solo work, recording his first disc in the spring of 2012; a collection of works by Liszt for the XXI-21 label.

An exceedingly sociable pianist, Philip has concertized extensively as a one of Canada’s most sought-after chamber musicians. He recently recorded a disc of Schubert duos with violinist Jonathan Crow, has toured Canada with various colleagues: violinist Andrew Wan, with pianist Janelle Fung as part of the Fung-Chiu Duo, and recently toured with Debut Atlantic alongside cellist Genevieve Guimond. He has performed with such artists as Matt Haimovitz, Stefan Dohr, principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic, Larry Combs and Craig Morris, former principals of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and trumpeter Jens Lindemann.

As an acclaimed accompanist-coach, Philip has been an invited professor-accompanist at the Conservatoire de musique de Montreal, is a staple at McGill University, and regularly accompanies at l’Universite de Montreal. He travels frequently across Canada and the U.S. to accompany for national and international competitions. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada (Toronto and London, ON), Philip is currently based in Montreal. He received his Performance Diploma from The Glenn Gould School while studying with Jenny Regehr and Marc Durand, and continued his studies with M. Durand at the University
of Montreal.
