Hailed by La Scena Musicale as a rising star, Tiohtià:ke/Montréal-based pianist David Potvin is known for playing that is “always controlled and beautiful” (Chris Wolf, Classic 107). As the winner of the 2022 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, he went on a recital tour across Canada, performing programs of all Canadian piano music. He recorded repertoire from that tour on his debut album, Catharsis, which was described as “distinctive and highly accomplished” (Gramophone Magazine). He can also be heard on composer-pianist Edward Enman’s album Breathe In, Breathe Out, performing music for piano duo. His performances have been broadcast on radio stations across Canada, including the CBC.

David is a versatile performer with a wide range of repertoire. His imaginative programs seamlessly combine standard repertoire and contemporary music with a focus on Canadian composers. Recent concert highlights include the American premieres of numerous Canadian works at the University of Arkansas, a recital with violinist Martin Beaver, and a recital in collaboration with the Canadian Music Centre celebrating the works of Quebec composer Jacques Hétu. He has also performed for the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg, the Regina Musical Club, the Bathurst Chamber Music Festival, and the Scotia Festival of Music. Internationally, David has performed in festivals in the USA, France, Romania, and England. His overseas appearances have been supported by the Nova Scotia Talent Trust.

Equally passionate about teaching, David maintains a private piano studio where he teaches students of all ages in both of Canada’s official languages. He has also given masterclasses at universities across Canada and the United States. He is a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music’s College of Examiners, and he has adjudicated for festivals and competitions across Canada. He is a member of the Quebec Registered Music Teachers Association.

David received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Toronto in the fall of 2020. There, he studied with Marietta Orlov and won the DMA recital competition. His thesis on the pianist Ricardo Viñes, who premiered many solo piano works by Ravel and Debussy, brought new information about this celebrated musician into English-language scholarship.

David is currently researching Léo-Pol Morin, a Quebec pianist and critic who was instrumental in bringing the avant-garde musical movement to Canada. He plans to record Morin’s compositions alongside the music of his contemporaries.

In his spare time, David enjoys watching soccer, cooking, exploring Montréal, and trying to keep up with his busy toddler.

Drew Jurecka, bandoneon/violin/vocals

Joseph Phillips, bass

Mark Camilleri, piano

Payadora is an award-winning ensemble that performs arrangements drawing from Argentinian/Uruguayan traditions (tangos, milongas, waltzes, and folk music such as the Zamba and chacarera), as well as original songs inspired by that tradition. Comprised of musicians who are each musical powerhouses in their own right, this “superstar group” has combined their profound love of tango with their classical, jazz, and global music backgrounds to create something entirely new. Payadora is officially endorsed by the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto for its adherence to the spirit of tango, and audiences flock to performances that convey joy, virtuosity, humour, and intense passion.

Since 2013, Payadora has presented concerts and sold-out shows at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa Chamberfest, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, Stratford Summer Music, Toronto Summer Music, Festival of the Sound, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Toronto Jazzfest, the COC’s World Music Series at the Four Seasons Centre, and the World Accordion & Tango Festival in Victoria. Payadora has also collaborated with the London Symphonia, the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony, the Hannaford Street Silver Band, and the PointeTango Dance Company – exploring the intersection between classical dance and earthy tango.

In the spring of 2023, Payadora’s third and latest CD, the critically acclaimed “Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango”, reached #1 on the World Music Charts in Europe. It received rave reviews, airtime, and press coverage around the globe, including the BBC, CTV, CBC television and radio, the Bangkok Post, NPR, and RTE Irish Public Radio. “…The most memorable release I have ever had the privilege to listen to and review” (WholeNote Magazine). “Silent Tears” is currently #17 on the Transglobal World Music Chart.

They have received creation and recording grants from numerous agencies, including the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council. Additionally, they were awarded a generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to create a multi-arts digital presentation of an Argentine folk tale told through music, dance, illustration, and words.

Across the globe, they have won numerous awards for their work. During Payadora’s November 2023 tour of South America, they won “Best New Piece” at the 2023 Yiddish Music Awards in São Paolo. Their most recent tour of Europe in June of 2024 included an appearance at Germany’s renowned Rudolstadt Festival, where they were winners of the German World Music Award (Weltmusikpreis Ruth Award) for their “Silent Tears” program.

Pianist Yolanda Tapia and singer Camila Montefusco co-founded the Obsidiana Duo with a clear mission: to celebrate the rich tapestry of Ibero-American musical culture and amplify the voices of historically overlooked composers.

Renowned internationally as a prize-winning collaborative pair, the duo has been featured in CollabFest and Collabaret 2020, and the International Keyboard Collaborative Arts Society in 2021. Noteworthy accolades include the First Prize at the Puerto Rico Collaborative Piano Competition, and a fellowship with the Toronto Summer Music Festival where they worked under the tutelage of Wolfram Rieger, Benjamin Appl, and Steven Philcox. They also participated in the Evolution Classical artistic residency at the Banff Centre, mentored by David Harrington and Paul Wiancko from the Kronos Quartet, the Gryphon Trio, Dinuk Wijeratne, Tom Allen, Patricia O’Callaghan, Marie Jossée Chartier, and Parmela Attariwara.

Highlights of their previous season include their inaugural national tour with Prairie Debut and the debut of ‘Circular Sky’ – a commissioned piece by composer Alice Ping Yee Ho and writer Madeleine Thien, supported by SOCAN, Prairie Debut, and the Canada Council for the Arts. This collaboration sparked ‘AIRE,’ a thematic exploration of immigration and belonging within their repertoire.

In recognition of their artistic vision, the Duo received a Canada Council for the Arts grant, facilitating collaborations with costume designer Madeline LeBlanc and graphic designer Paula Vergara. This collaboration culminated in the visual elements for ‘AIRE y TIERRA’.

Their performances have been showcased on the stages of Music Toronto’s Celebration of Small Ensembles Concert Series, Music Monday Toronto, 5 at the First, and London’s In Diversity There is Harmony. Looking ahead to the 24/25 season, they look forward to touring ‘AIRE y TIERRA’ with Debut Atlantic.

Camila and Yolanda call Toronto home, where they continuously explore new avenues in their artistic journeys, driven by a deep commitment to forging genuine and impactful connections with their audiences.

Camila Montefusco

Camila Montefusco is a storyteller at heart. Born in Brazil, the mezzo-soprano started her career as a violinist, playing classical and popular music in numerous Symphony Orchestras. She eventually fell in love with the voice while performing as a pit musician for opera productions, and since then, has won a series of vocal competitions in Brazil, Canada, the US, and Russia. She received her master’s in voice from Western University and was a 21-22 Rebanks Fellow at the Glenn Gould School.

As a co-founder of the Obsidiana Duo, Camila is dedicated to the importance of Ibero-American musical culture and history. By bringing the music of historically overlooked composers to the stage, she strives to amplify the voices of communities that have long been silenced. In the 23/24 season, the duo completed their first national tour on the artistic roster of Prairie Debut, and in 24/25 they will tour their latest curation with Debut Atlantic.

This season, Camila will appear with the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, making her mainstage debut as Maman in L’enfant et les sortilèges. Whether in opera or recital, she hopes to connect with people through art and inspire change in a world that hungers for it.

Yolanda Tapia

Yolanda Tapia is a multifaceted musician, international pianist, educator, vocal coach, and Fulbright Scholar. She is actively engaged with numerous educational institutions, such as the University of Toronto, El Sistema Toronto, and the Community Music Schools of Toronto. Previously, she was the staff and collaborative pianist at the Instituto Superior de Música in Veracruz and Western University.

Her commitment to the music community is evident through co-founding collaborativepianist.info and Cybercollab 2021. As a member of Obsidiana Duo, Yolanda has embarked on national tours with Prairie Debut and Debut Atlantic alongside her duo partner, Camila Montefusco.

Mexican-born, Yolanda has performed as a soloist with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra and CSU Symphony Orchestra. As an orchestral and chamber musician, she has performed with various ensembles, including a residency with Holland America’s Lincoln Center Stage Piano Quartet. She has won awards at Mexico’s Chamber Music National Competition, the CSU concerto competition, Xalapa Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Kiwanis Festival.

She has taught piano and collaborative piano masterclasses at the University of Veracruz, FIM Loja in Ecuador, Cambrian College, and presented lecture recitals at CollabFest2021, Latin American Chamber Players, Western University, and El Canto Online.

Yolanda holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Veracruz, a Master of Music degree from Colorado State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Western Ontario. When not performing, she delights in experiencing live music across a spectrum of genres, ranging from heavy metal and punk – to rock and jazz.

Created by cellist Daniel Hamin Go and pianist Jean-Luc Therrien, the Therrien-Go Duo’s fortuitous encounter occurred in the illustrious setting of the Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Residency Program at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Their convergence forged a dynamic partnership that has since captivated audiences across Canada. With an innate connection that electrifies the stage, their music is a mesmerizing fusion of thought-provoking interpretation, innovative collaboration, and a sincere dedication to community engagement, both near and far.

Daniel and Jean-Luc believe in the power of music and its ability to evoke truth; their artistic mission lies in preserving the legacy of great music from the past, reimagining its utilization in present times, and inspiring the future generation of artists and audiences.

Daniel Hamin Go

The first time Daniel Hamin Go picked up the cello, he was 12.

As he drew the bow across the open C string, the cello’s vibrations resonated throughout his entire body. He remembers being moved and filled with light – a light that has guided his desire to explore the truth that lies in life, in music, and in himself. It’s the light that fuels his need to connect with audiences and to share interpretations that demand a full commitment to emotional expression – and it’s what’s propelling his international career as a soloist and chamber musician. Go has performed across three continents, making appearances at the Berliner Philharmonie, Cadogan, Carnegie Hall, Flagey Studios, and Konzerthaus Berlin. As an avid chamber musician, Go has received invitations to festivals including the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, IMS Prussia Cove, Kronberg Academy, Krzyzowa Music, Mendelssohn on Mull, Music Academy of the West, Ravinia’s Steans Institute of Music, Tsinandali Festival, and Yellow Barn, and his chamber partners include Jonathan Biss, Glenn Dicterow, Miriam Fried, David Geber, Ida Kavafian, Richard O’Neill, Daniel Philips, Rachel Podger, Wolfgang Redik, Fazil Say, Barry Shiffman, and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. Go’s 24-25 season includes appearances at Big Lake Arts, Caledon Music Festival, Kallos Chamber Music Series, Princeton University’s ‘Sound Kitchen’ series, and a Canadian tour with Debut Atlantic.

With the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council, Go is looking forward to recording his debut album, ARIRANG.
Finalist and prizewinner of several competitions including the Concours Prix d’Europe and the Sendai International Piano Competition in Japan, Canadian pianist Jean-Luc Therrien believes his job as a musician is to cross barriers – of language, of culture, of time. He was named one of Canada’s 30 hot classical musicians under 30 for 2020 by CBC Music. And his first solo album Piano Preludes, just released on the Label Orpheus Classical in 2021, was chosen as one of the best releases of 2021 by CBC Music.

Recently, he was part of The Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Performance Residency Program at The Glenn Gould School in Toronto. In February 2022, he performed with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra before going on tour across 7 European countries with French violinist Jean-Samuel Bez to launch their first album. And then, it was back to Canada for 16 solo performances in the Maritimes with Debut Atlantic.

After graduating from the Conservatoire de Musique de Trois-Rivières in the studio of Denise Trudel, Jean-Luc headed for Austria and the University Mozarteum in Salzburg to complete a Master of Arts Degree in Piano Performance.
Flute and guitar duo, Duo Beija-Flor, presents a dynamic and accessible repertoire of classical works inspired by the many diverse cultures found around the world. This fresh and modern style they call ethno-classical highlights the emotions and experiences we all share, expressing them through the lens of music.

The duo has performed across Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Costa Rica. To date, they have released three crikcally acclaimed albums: Envol (2011), Muzica (2013), and Costas (2018). The duo’s latest album, Costas, was released in September 2018 with the American label Big Round Records/NAXOS of America and garnered rave reviews (4.5/5 Winnipeg Free Press, 4/4 Cinemusical (USA), McNally Robinson Booksellers/Classic 107FM (Manitoba) album of the month for November 2018). Their unique approach to their repertoire has led to invitations on many TV and radio programs (Radio-Canada, Global TV, CIBL, TVCK, Cogeco TV, etc.).

Since their creation, the duo have been recipients of many awards and grants from several organizations, including the Canadian Arts Council, the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, laureates for Mon Accès à la Scène, le fond de promotion from the GMMQ, the Leo Brouwer endowment from the Banff Arts Centre, residency grant from the National Arts Centre and a residency grant from Orford Music. They were selected to tour under the auspicious of Prairie Debut for the 2020-22 seasons. More recently, they were featured in the digital concert series from Debut Atlantic in February 2022.

Hailed by San Francisco’s Flute View magazine as “…an incredibly dynamic and creative team“, the duo is known for their “masterful arrangements” (Flute Quarterly, USA), which helps them create a more personal style, something outside of the established flute and guitar repertoire. To lend credence and to better understand the cultures represented in their arrangements, the duo takes care whenever possible to meet and learn from the people and musicians that make up the culture that inspired these works. In 2015, they travelled to Buenos Aires to create and refine their arrangements of Astor Piazzolla’s “Escualo” and “Oblivion,” which premiered at the Museo Fernandez Blanco in Buenos Aires. They also worked with cimbalomist Nicolae Margineanu and flutist Mircea Gheorghescu to better understand the Romanian musical language for their arrangement of Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Dances.”

Constantly searching for new works, Duo Beija-Flor has collaborated with several Canadian composers to expand their repertoire. These composers include Roddy Ellias’s “Havana Street Parade” (premiered at Concordia University, October 2013), Carmen Braden’s “The Culture of IsolaKon, aka No Rehearsal” (premiered simultaneously online and on the radio in partnership with the University of Calgary’s campus radio CSJW in November 2020, grant from SOCAN and Prairie Debut), and “Petite Nation, Suite Rustique Riponaise” by Sylvain Picard, premiered in June 2022 in St-Placide, Québec. The duo is currently in discussion with the legendary Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer for a newly commissioned work for flute and guitar based on the Cuban contradanza. The piece, which will be only the third flute and guitar piece he has written, is set to be finished in November 2023.

In early 2023, the duo spent 12 days residency at Orford Music in Quebec to work on an all-new program, Musings from Elsewhere. This program pairs pieces from different composers worldwide that share a common inspiration. This ode to creativity sees Boccherini meet Rossini, Piazzolla visiting Patrick Roux, Debussy inspired by Miyagi, Ravel by Cuba and Leo Brouwer and Purcell trading ideas with Villa-Lobos.
