Praised for their “emotional investment” and “decisive” interpretations (Toronto Star) and “intense” and “hot-blooded” performances (Globe and Mail), Debut Atlantic is pleased to welcome back the Tokai Quartet, one of Canada’s leading string quartets.

In September 2007, the quartet became prize winners at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the first Canadian group to do so since 1992. The vibrancy that this exciting young ensemble brings to their performances is gaining them enthusiastic audiences across Canada, and has earned the Tokai Quartet a growing demand for performances at concert series across the country.

The accomplishments of this gifted ensemble have earned the Tokai Quartet some impressive accolades. In 2003, they were recipients of the Felix Galimir Award and the following year the Tokai Quartet went on to receive the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award, which has facilitated their participation in residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and at the Stanford Summer Music Festival. They were further distinguished in April 2005 by the award of a debut concert presented by the Frederick Gaviller Music Foundation.

The Tokai Quartet has been ensemble-in-residence at Queen’s University in Kingston, the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute, and Music at Port Milford. In 2010 they participated in the SLSQ Emerging String Quartet Program performing and teaching at the Stanford University as well as participating in outreach activities at numerous schools and other venues.

Learn more about Philip’s life and music by clicking here.

Philip Chiu has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance and sensitivity of his playing, as well as for his ability to connect with audiences. He appears regularly in concert halls and stages throughout Canada. His concerto debut in 2005 was Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto with Maestra Tania Miller, as winner of The Glenn Gould School Concerto Competition. After an extended period of near-exclusive chamber music-making, he has returned to solo work, recording his first disc in the spring of 2012; a collection of works by Liszt for the XXI-21 label.

An exceedingly sociable pianist, Philip has concertized extensively as a one of Canada’s most sought-after chamber musicians. He recently recorded a disc of Schubert duos with violinist Jonathan Crow, has toured Canada with various colleagues: violinist Andrew Wan, with pianist Janelle Fung as part of the Fung-Chiu Duo, and recently toured with Debut Atlantic alongside cellist Genevieve Guimond. He has performed with such artists as Matt Haimovitz, Stefan Dohr, principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic, Larry Combs and Craig Morris, former principals of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and trumpeter Jens Lindemann.

As an acclaimed accompanist-coach, Philip has been an invited professor-accompanist at the Conservatoire de musique de Montreal, is a staple at McGill University, and regularly accompanies at l’Universite de Montreal. He travels frequently across Canada and the U.S. to accompany for national and international competitions. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada (Toronto and London, ON), Philip is currently based in Montreal. He received his Performance Diploma from The Glenn Gould School while studying with Jenny Regehr and Marc Durand, and continued his studies with M. Durand at the University
of Montreal.

He can be heard on Classical 96.3 FM, CBC Radio, and Radio-Canada. Find out more about Phil by visiting www.philipchiu.ca.

Winners of the 2009 Mississauga Arts Council award for “Best Emerging Performing Arts Ensemble”, TorQ Percussion Quartet was formed by four Canadian percussionists looking to add new energy to percussion repertoire and performance. Renowned for their engaging performances, members Richard Burrows, Adam Campbell, Jamie Drake and Daniel Morphy are committed to making new music accessible to audiences that span generations and geography.

TorQ has performed to critical acclaim and standing ovations across Canada and beyond, including performances at the International Percussion Quartet Festival (Luxembourg), Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Indian River Festival (Prince Edward Island), Stratford Summer Music Festival, MusicFest Canada (Vancouver) and the Open Ears Contemporary Music Festival (Ontario).

A constantly evolving repertoire gives TorQ the opportunity to combine the most recent commissions with better-known works by composers such as John Cage, David Lang and Nebojsa Zivkovic. In addition to promoting new music, they are firm believers in the importance of music education. Working with Ontario based “Prologue for the Performing Arts”, TorQ performs 70 shows per academic year to elementary and secondary school audiences across the province. They are frequent educational collaborators with Soundstreams Canada, and present masterclasses and workshops for various organizations across the country, including Debut Atlantic.
