Ensemble Callinos embodies the very essence of lyrical beauty with its captivating blend of flute, cello, and piano. The name “Callinos” draws inspiration from Calliope, the muse of poetry, and Linos, the legendary master of the lyre, perfectly reflecting the ensemble’s artistic mission.

Comprised of the brilliant Edyelwys Silva (flute), Thomas Chartré (cello), and Jeanne Frenette (piano), Ensemble Callinos brings to life major works and original transcriptions written or arranged for this unique instrumental trio. Deeply committed to artistic diversity, Ensemble Callinos is also dedicated to showcasing underrepresented composers, particularly those whose works are rarely performed. Through thoughtful programming, they strive to bring greater visibility to these voices and expand the traditional classical repertoire.

Their socially engaged approach ensures that music reaches diverse audiences through innovative and heartfelt projects. Since their foundation in 2022, they have partnered with organizations such as Share the Warmth, le Chaînon, and CHSLD VIGI-Reine-Elisabeth, performing concerts that support and uplift vulnerable communities.

In 2025, Ensemble Callinos will embark on an exciting musical journey to share their passion for French music with audiences across the Maritimes and Quebec. Through their captivating projects, Rêveries and Panorama français, and with the support of Debut Atlantic and Jeunesses musicales Canada, the ensemble will explore the rich and diverse landscape of French musical heritage.

Concert Description:

The lyricism of the flute, cello, and piano trio comes alive in the hands of Ensemble Callinos, whose refined artistry brings vivid expression to this program of French and French-inspired works. Philippe Gaubert’s Trois aquarelles opens with impressionistic charm, evoking nature and light with delicate fluidity. Auguste Descarries offers a heartfelt Canadian homage in his Complainte d’après un “Canadien errant”, steeped in nostalgia and national identity. Gabriel Pierné’s Sonata da camera sparkles with elegance and wit, while Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune unfolds as a sensuous, dreamlike reverie. Closing the program is Louise Farrenc’s formidable Trio op. 45, a masterful blend of drama, lyricism, and virtuosic flair. From luminous textures to passionate contrasts, Ensemble Callinos invites you on a journey through soundscapes that are both intimate and richly expressive.

Created by cellist Daniel Hamin Go and pianist Jean-Luc Therrien, the Therrien-Go Duo’s fortuitous encounter occurred in the illustrious setting of the Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Residency Program at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Their convergence forged a dynamic partnership that has since captivated audiences across Canada. With an innate connection that electrifies the stage, their music is a mesmerizing fusion of thought-provoking interpretation, innovative collaboration, and a sincere dedication to community engagement, both near and far.

Daniel and Jean-Luc believe in the power of music and its ability to evoke truth; their artistic mission lies in preserving the legacy of great music from the past, reimagining its utilization in present times, and inspiring the future generation of artists and audiences.

Daniel Hamin Go

The first time Daniel Hamin Go picked up the cello, he was 12.

As he drew the bow across the open C string, the cello’s vibrations resonated throughout his entire body. He remembers being moved and filled with light – a light that has guided his desire to explore the truth that lies in life, in music, and in himself. It’s the light that fuels his need to connect with audiences and to share interpretations that demand a full commitment to emotional expression – and it’s what’s propelling his international career as a soloist and chamber musician. Go has performed across three continents, making appearances at the Berliner Philharmonie, Cadogan, Carnegie Hall, Flagey Studios, and Konzerthaus Berlin. As an avid chamber musician, Go has received invitations to festivals including the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, IMS Prussia Cove, Kronberg Academy, Krzyzowa Music, Mendelssohn on Mull, Music Academy of the West, Ravinia’s Steans Institute of Music, Tsinandali Festival, and Yellow Barn, and his chamber partners include Jonathan Biss, Glenn Dicterow, Miriam Fried, David Geber, Ida Kavafian, Richard O’Neill, Daniel Philips, Rachel Podger, Wolfgang Redik, Fazil Say, Barry Shiffman, and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. Go’s 24-25 season includes appearances at Big Lake Arts, Caledon Music Festival, Kallos Chamber Music Series, Princeton University’s ‘Sound Kitchen’ series, and a Canadian tour with Debut Atlantic.

With the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council, Go is looking forward to recording his debut album, ARIRANG. Go’s education took place in six institutions across five countries, regularly participating in masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Ferenc Rados, and Rita Wagner. Daniel received a Bachelor of Music from the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Julia Lichten and David Geber, a Master of Music at the Hochschule fü r Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ Berlin in the class of Nicolas Altstaedt, and as a recipient of the prestigious Bicentenary Award and the Drake Calleja Trust Award, Daniel completed an Advanced Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. During the 2021-22 season, Daniel was an artist-in-residence at the coveted Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel working closely with Gary Hoffman. During the 2022-23 season, Daniel held a fellowship position at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Residency Program.

Daniel performs on a cello made by Antonio & Rafaelle Gagliano, Naples ca. 1830, generously on loan by CANIMEX INC., from Drummondville (Quebec), Canada.

Jean-Luc Therrien

Finalist and prizewinner of several competitions including the Concours Prix d’Europe and the Sendai International Piano Competition in Japan, Canadian pianist Jean-Luc Therrien believes his job as a musician is to cross barriers – of language, of culture, of time. He was named one of Canada’s 30 hot classical musicians under 30 for 2020 by CBC Music. And his first solo album Piano Preludes, just released on the Label Orpheus Classical in 2021, was chosen as one of the best releases of 2021 by CBC Music.

Recently, he was part of The Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Performance Residency Program at The Glenn Gould School in Toronto. He also made his national radio debut on CBC Music with the broadcast of a virtual recital recorded in Toronto in the summer of 2021. In February 2022, he performed with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra before going on tour across 7 European countries with French violinist Jean-Samuel Bez to launch their first album. And then, it was back to Canada for 16 solo performances in the Maritimes with Debut Atlantic.

After graduating from the Conservatoire de Musique de Trois-Rivières in the studio of Denise Trudel, Jean-Luc headed for Austria and the University Mozarteum in Salzburg to complete a Master of Arts Degree in Piano Performance. Then, he remained in Europe to pursue further musical projects, thanks to a major grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Later, he returned to Canada and entered The Ihnatowycz Piano Program at The Glenn Gould School in Toronto where he worked with another important musical mentor – Marietta Orlov.

Over the years, the recognition has poured in: among other awards, he’s won several prizes in competitions such as the Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize Competition in Italy, the CMC Stepping Stone and, with violinist Jean-Samuel Bez, the Chamber Music Grand Prize at the Luigi Zanuccoli International Competition in Italy.

Liam&LaLa is a new cello/piano duo composed of two of Canada’s brightest young talents, cellist David Liam Roberts and pianist LaLa Lee. The duo are dedicated to innovative programming and unforgettably engaging performances. In November 2020, they made their recital debut for Cecilia Concerts at the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall in Halifax, to great acclaim. Despite having formed under the extraordinary circumstances of the ongoing pandemic, the duo has quickly developed a unique and exciting artistic voice.

Individually, David Liam and LaLa are both establishing themselves as two of the most promising emerging Canadian musicians. David Liam is the winner of the 1st Prize and Grand Award at the 2018 National Music Festival of Canada as well as the esteemed 2020 Michael Measures 2nd Prize, while LaLa performs extensively throughout China and Canada and has played concerti with orchestras including the Shanghai Philharmonic, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Symphony Nova Scotia. Both artists have been featured on CBC’s list of Canada’s 30 Top Classical Musicians Under 30 and are recipients of The Royal Conservatory’s most prestigious scholarships.

Winner of the 2021 Canada Council for the Arts’ Michael Measures 1st Prize, David Liam Roberts has established a reputation as one of Canada’s most promising cellists. David Liam was awarded both the 1st Prize and Grand Award at the 2018 National Music Festival of Canada and recently won 1st Prize of the 2022 biennial WMC McLellan Competition after performing the Schumann Cello Concerto as soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in the competition’s final round.

Upcoming engagements include a 3-week recital tour of the Atlantic provinces in March 2023 with pianist LaLa Lee as 2022-23 Debut Atlantic touring artists. Recent engagements include a solo appearance with the Winnipeg Symphony in a subscription concert performing double cello concerti with Yuri Hooker (conducted by Daniel Raiskin), recorded concerts presented by the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg and Virtuosi Concerts, and a solo recital in collaboration with Winnipeg’s Polycoro Chamber Choir and multimedia artist Taylor McArthur.

Chamber music has been an integral part of David Liam’s life since he started busking with his older siblings at age 5, playing Métis fiddle tunes in his home province of Manitoba. Recent highlights have been collaborating with pianist Nicolas Namoradze and violinists Joel Link (Dover Quartet) and Scott St. John at the Toronto Summer Music Festival. David Liam is a regular extra with the Toronto Symphony since the 2021-22 season.

Despite the pandemic, she continued the year-long celebration with two more all-Beethoven recitals at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance’s Beethoven Festival in October. She also gave four recitals for Cecilia Concerts and will perform Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto with Ensemble Testori in Milan, Italy as well as Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with Mandle Philharmonic in Toronto.

From the age of three, LaLa began learning piano, studying at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts and with Lynn Stodola of Dalhousie University.

The four members of VC4, (Beth Silver, Amahl Arulanandam, Bryan Holt, and Sarah Gans) are all cellist friends who met in Toronto, and their lives have been connected in many ways since then. They all attended the University of Toronto and McGill University and participated in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada training programme. They have played together in various configurations but have not been able to collaborate in this fashion until now. The four members have shared many life experiences over the years, and now are able to share this unique musical experience.

About VC4’s Digital Series Concert:
This programme was inspired by the feeling of coming out the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic and celebrates reconnecting with friends.

The theme and variations composed by Beth Silver are based on a melody collected by Jewish-Ukrainian ethnomusicologist Moishe Beregovski in the early twentieth century. This quartet is part of a group of works commissioned by Prof. Anna Shternshis and the University of Toronto with the purpose of bringing to life some of Beregovski’s recently resurfaced notes and sketches. These notes were confiscated by the USSR, and Beregovski died thinking his collections had been destroyed. Beregovski’s correspondence indicates that he asked composers to incorporate pieces of Jewish musical folklore into their compositions in the way Bartók and Stravinsky had previously done, but his wish was never fulfilled. The variations were written with this in mind; in the styles of famous composers he would have been familiar with. The writing attached to this particular melody translates to “I planted vegetables in my little garden” and was collected by Ida Shaykes from Lerner Visnshaftler in Kiev in 1946. Shaykes was one of very few women ethnomusicologists associated with Beregovski, and was trained by him to continue his work.

Members of VC4 also attended McGill University with Kaitlyn Raitz, a wonderful cellist and composer who now resides in Nashville. Her music is heavily inspired by both Western Classical music and traditional Bluegrass and American folk music. She remains a dear friend to this day which makes it all the more special that the ensemble is able to perform her music.

Grieg’s Morning Mood and Jocelyn Morlock’s The Violet Hour are about the sunrise – a peaceful, beautiful moment of the day that symbolizes rebirth and renewal. The works by Kaitlyn Raitz call back to a time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful. The Goltermann Serenade is a moment of serenity and the Matz movement is an energetic party.

Biographies of the members of VC4:

Beth Silver
Beth Silver (M.Mus) is thrilled to be part of a community in which she can thrive on her intuition and creativity. As an involved freelancer based in Toronto, she is admired for expressive, compelling playing and her abilities to paint in many colours through her instrument and capture character and spontaneity in music – especially amidst interactive chamber settings. A lover of many genres, Beth is equally at home in a traditional classical ensemble as she is in a band arranging and exploring new voices for cello. Recently, she has also assumed the role as North America’s foremost (i.e. only) klezmer fiddle-style cellist.

Performances with various chamber projects have brought her to festivals around the world, including Salzburg’s Kammermusik Festival, Ottawa Chamber Festival, Toronto
Summer Music Festival, Glatt und Verkehrt Festival in Austria, Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival, Festival Napa Valley, Ashkenaz Fest, Tirgan Festival, and
Klezkanada. She has been presented across Canada by Jeunesses Musicales, Prairie Debut, and Debut Atlantic as part of the Ladom Ensemble.

She is the recipient of grants from the Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council and her awards include the 2014 Ben Steinberg Musical Legacy Award recognizing musical
achievement in the Canadian Jewish community. She is currently arranging settings of Jewish refugee songs for BBC’s documentary on Jews in Muslim lands.

Beth enjoys spending non-musical time painting, reading, practicing horticulture, and doing yoga, and lives in Toronto’s west end with her cat Sica.

VC2
VC2 Cello Duo is an innovative ensemble that captivates audiences through their performances of classical masterworks, unknown gems and boundary pushing music.
Comprised of cellists Amahl Arulanandam and Bryan Holt, CBC Music calls VC2 “a tight unit, with excellent intonation and expression.” They present artistically challenging, yet accessible programs in venues ranging from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall. As respected cellists, they have performed as part of leading music organizations including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Soundstreams, Art of Time Ensemble, Continuum Contemporary Music, New Music Concerts, Music in the Barns, Thin Edge New Music Collective, Tapestry Opera and others. The duo have been
featured artists at Toronto Summer Music Festival, soundSCAPE Festival (Italy), Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg, Ottawa Chamberfest, Indian River Festival, New
Works Calgary, Ottawa New Music Creators, 21C Music Festival, Ritornello Festival, and the Prairie Cello Institute.

Committed to the creation of new works by living composers, especially those from their home country of Canada, VC2 commissioned five Canadian composers to create works based on the Beethoven Cello Sonatas project. In addition to their performances, VC2, with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council, recorded these works and in fall 2018, released the album Beethoven’s Cellists which CBC Radio calls a “first-rate” recording.

In the fall/winter of 2019/20, VC2 embarked on a tour of the Western Canada, presented by Prairie Debut, which included a brand-new commission, Heist, by
Chinese-Canadian composer Vincent Ho. The duo has also toured with Debut Atlantic (2018) in support of their debut album. Entering their fifth year, VC2 will be recording their second full-length album that will be comprised entirely of Canadian cello music, celebrating the diverse compositional voices Canada has to offer.

Sarah Gans
Sarah Gans, cellist, is currently based in Toronto, Ontario. From 2016 to 2019 Sarah served as the Assistant Principal Cello of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Prior to this, Sarah graduated with a Master of Music from the Juilliard School where she studied with Darrett Adkins. There, she was the recipient of the Irene Diamond
Graduate Fellowship as well as awarded the Grunin Prize in Cello.

In 2014 Sarah received her Bachelor of Music from McGill’s Schulich School of Music where she studied with Matt Haimovitz. At McGill Sarah was a recipient of the Lloyd Carr-Harris String Scholarship, and upon graduation, was awarded the Salsinger Tani Gold Medal in Music Performance as well as recognized for Outstanding Achievement
in Cello Performance. Sarah has spent her summers at festivals such as the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Banff Centre’s Masterclasses for Strings, and the
Toronto Summer Music Festival.
