Keeping Live Music Accessible for Students

Debut Atlantic is committed to ensuring that students across Atlantic Canada continue to have access to high-quality live arts experiences. Through our Debut Goes to School (DGTS) program, professional artists visit schools and communities, inspiring young audiences through music, storytelling, and cultural exchange.

While participation in our DGTS remains no to low-cost for participating schools, recent funding changes have increased the importance of community support in sustaining this important program. The recent elimination of the NS Artist in Schools funding has created significant pressure on our ability to meet the growing demand for these performances, while ensuring artists are fairly compensated for their work. Where possible, we invite schools, students, families, and community members to support the sustainability of the program through voluntary contributions.

How Your Support Makes an Impact

Contributions to Debut Goes to School help us:

Bring professional artists into schools throughout Atlantic Canada.

Keep performances accessible for students regardless of financial circumstances.

Ensure the long-term sustainability of our Debut Goes to School! program.

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create meaningful arts experiences for students!

How You Can Help

Pay What You Can

Schools that are able are invited to make a voluntary “pay what you can” contribution to support the continued delivery of Debut Goes to School performances.

Toonies for Tunes

Schools can participate in our Toonies for Tunes campaign by encouraging students and families to donate a toonie (or loose change or any donation amount) in support of arts education. When applicable, Debut Atlantic artists can collect Toonies for Tunes donations during their school visit, making participation simple and convenient.

Share with Your School Community

Help spread the word by sharing information about Debut Goes to School and Toonies for Tunes with parents, guardians, school councils, and community partners. Increased awareness helps strengthen support for arts experiences in schools.

Donate Anytime

Individuals, families, and community supporters can make a donation to support Debut Atlantic’s arts education programming at any time through our CanadaHelps donation page HERE.

A small gift can have a lasting impact.

Whether you make a donation, participate in Toonies for Tunes, or help share our message, you are helping ensure that students continue to experience the joy, creativity, and inspiration of live performances.

For more information about Toonies for Tunes, school contributions, or supporting Debut Atlantic’s educational programs, please contact Debut Atlantic.

Montreal, April 9, 2026 – Violinist Julia Mirzoev and violinist and guitarist Russell Iceberg – also known as Duo Chromatika – have been selected for a pan-Canadian tour offered by Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Debut Atlantic and Prairie Debut in 2027-2028.

The three classical music organizations announced in June 2025 that they were teaming up again for a third edition of Road Trip! A Pan-Canadian Tour to offer an emerging artist or ensemble a tour that would span the country.

“Duo Chromatika caught our attention with their bold and authentic approach. Julia Mirzoev and Russell Iceberg stand out for their remarkable versatility, skillfully navigating classical repertoire, jazz, and even improvisation. We are convinced they will offer audiences across the country a vibrant and inspiring musical experience,” says Danièle LeBlanc, Executive and Artistic Director of Jeunesses Musicales Canada.

“Debut Atlantic is thrilled to present Duo Chromatika as part of this exciting Pan-Canadian partnership. Duo Chromatika brings extraordinary creativity and artistry to the stage, and we’re proud to share their work with audiences throughout the Atlantic region,” says Erin Sparks, Executive Director of Debut Atlantic.

Road Trip! A Pan-Canadian Tour will run from September 2027 through October 2028 and will include approximately thirty dates across Canada and the Territories. “Prairie Debut is pleased to continue this unique partnership with Debut Atlantic and Jeunesses Musicales Canada to present this extraordinary Pan-Canadan touring opportunity to Duo Chromatika”, adds Po Yeh, Executive Director of Prairie Debut.

They will be touring as part of Debut Atlantic’s 2028/29 season, and will be on the artist line-up for September 2028!

DUO CHROMATIKA
Duo Chromatika is the dynamic partnership of violinist Julia Mirzoev and violinist – violist – guitarist Russell Iceberg, two versatile artists who blur the boundaries between classical tradition, jazz virtuosity, and the freedom of improvisation. Julia and Russell bring exceptional artistry and distinction to their work as a duo. Partners both on stage and in life invite audiences to explore Moments in Transit, their touring program that reimagines repertoire across genres and centuries.

From the elegance of classical-era duets to the infectious swing of hot-club jazz, Duo Chromatika brings a fresh, adventurous spirit to the chamber music stage. Their programming also celebrates living voices, championing contemporary composers while contributing their own original compositions and arrangements. Currently, they are developing a collection of jazz-inspired violin–guitar works for Julia’s upcoming debut crossover album, Sapphire Blues.

Recent appearances include recitals for Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Salle Bourgie, and Night off at Nickel 9, and upcoming performances include the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, Centre Culturel de Bromont, and a residency for Music Toronto’s Celebration of Small ensembles.

Whether interpreting a buoyant Rococo dance, an innovative contemporary piece, or an electrifying original work, Duo Chromatika creates concerts that are vibrant, genre-fluid, and distinguished by expressive virtuosity. In doing so, they seek to engage and inspire audiences across many musical traditions and genres.

The residency features works by Amy Brandon, Robert Humber, Luke Blackmore, and Andrew Staniland, offering students an accessible and engaging introduction to new music while providing insight into the creative process behind these compositions. In addition to performances, the residency emphasizes interactive learning opportunities, encouraging dialogue between artist and audience and creating meaningful connections within each community.

Described as “a natural performer who infuses his interpretations with energy, excitement, and a broad expressive range,” Ben Diamond is a versatile Canadian guitarist known for his work as a performer, educator, improviser, and collaborator. A recent graduate of the M.Mus. in Performance program at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, he is particularly focused on working with composers to develop and premiere new works for the guitar.

This residency reflects Debut Atlantic’s ongoing commitment to meaningful outreach and arts education, ensuring that young audiences—no matter where they live—have access to high-quality, live musical experiences. We look forward to the many communities Ben will visit in the coming months, and to the lasting impact these performances will have on students and educators alike.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 11, 2026

Encore Performance: Thalea String Quartet Returns with Something Golden

K’JIUPKTUK/HALIFAX, NS – Debut Atlantic is thrilled to bring back the Thalea String Quartet as encore artists for a 9-concert tour across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick this March. First introduced to our audiences during the 2020/21 season, the Quartet returns with their signature bold, genre-defying artistry that has captivated audiences from North America to China. As the Calgary Herald raved, “Thalea never failed to deliver a stirring performance”—a thrilling experience Atlantic audiences can now witness live.

This season, the Quartet presents Something Golden, a luminous journey through the natural world. The program features a brand-new commission by Halifax-based composer India Gailey alongside contemporary works that transport listeners from windswept California cliffs to snow-laden Massachusetts forests, and into the hidden world inside a butterfly’s cocoon. These pieces, filled with fleeting moments of beauty and stillness, are seamlessly paired with Haydn’s beloved string quartet “The Bird,” whose playful gestures create a perfect counterpoint, connecting centuries of musical storytelling.

Known for their expressive performances, the Thalea String Quartet has captivated audiences worldwide, with appearances at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Toronto’s Massey Hall. They have collaborated with acclaimed artists across genres—from Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw to Canadian band BADBADNOTGOOD and R&B artist Charlotte Day Wilson—showcasing their adventurous, genre-defying approach. Deeply committed to new music, the Quartet has premiered dozens of works, including commissions with celebrated composers such as Osvaldo Golijov and Paola Prestini, while also bringing beloved classics to life with clarity and emotional depth. Something Golden brings their signature warmth and expressive storytelling to audiences in Atlantic Canada, combining artistry and community connection in every performance.

January 15, 2026

Tong Wang Ignites the Keys: ‘Towards the Flame’ Hits Atlantic Canada this February

K’JIUPUKTUK/HALIFAX, NS – This February, acclaimed Canadian pianist Tong Wang brings her evocative program Towards the Flame to Atlantic Canada with Debut Atlantic. Over a two-week, 9-concert tour across Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, Wang will showcase her signature blend of technical brilliance and emotional depth.

Towards the Flame explores a striking emotional spectrum. From the tragic, majestic works of Chopin and Scriabin to the kaleidoscopic, mystical soundscapes of Ho and Stravinsky, the program journeys through realms of fire and ice, grief and beauty. Each piece is a universe of its own, yet all share a common thread: the human experience of vulnerability, fear, and hope. At its core, the program asks whether we can rise toward the light — a meditation on courage, belief, and acceptance.

Praised for performances that are intense, imaginative, and emotionally charged, Tong Wang captivates audiences both on grand stages and in intimate settings. With a career spanning North America, Europe, and Asia, she brings music to life in ways that are immersive, deeply human, and unforgettable.
