Critics call Jan Lisiecki an “aristocrat of the piano”, an “extraordinary talent” and praise him for “remarkably poetic and imaginatively executed [playing]”. At age 15, Jan is already making a name for himself on the Canadian and international stage. He had his orchestral debut with the Calgary Civic Symphony at the age of 9, as the youngest winner in the history of the Calgary Concerto Competition and has since performed more then 30 times as the featured soloist with orchestras in Canada and abroad, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, L’Orchestre Symphonique du Quebec, Minnesota Orchestra, and Sinfonia Varsovia, to name a few. He has played at Carnegie Hall, at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall, and at the Kaufman Hall and has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman, James Ehnes, and Emanuel Ax.
He has won a litany of major Canadian music titles. In 2008 he won the Grand Award in both the Canadian Music Competitions (June 2008) and the Canadian Music Festival (August 2008, as the youngest in history). Jan has been very successful in international competitions in USA and England; winning two first prizes and being a high-placing laureate in the others. Last summer, he performed the Chopin F minor Concerto with Sinfonia Varsovia and was named the sensation of the prestigious festival “Chopin and His Europe” in Poland.
On August 20, 2009 he will return to Warsaw with the Chopin E minor Concerto. Jan has performed in England, Scotland, Poland, Japan, China, USA, and Canada. His performances have been broadcast nationally on both CBC Radio in Canada and the Radio 2 in Poland. Jan’s compositions have won prizes at the National Finals of the Canada Music Week Writing Competition and in the CBC Mozart Variations Competition. He is currently a student in the International Baccalaureate Programme at Western Canada High School in Calgary. Jan frequently performs for various charities, and was appointed a National Youth Ambassador for UNICEF Canada in June 2008.
