Genevieve Guimond

Born in Montreal in 1990, Canadian cellist Genevieve Guimond began her cello studies at the age of five. She made her orchestral debut at the age of ten as soloist with I Musici de Montreal under the direction of Yuli Trnovsky, whom she continued her studies with until 2007. She has also had lessons with Laurence Lesser, Lluis Claret, Vagram Saradjan, Andres Diaz, and Hans Jorgen Jensen. In addition, she has performed in masterclasses for Mischa Maisky and Lynn Harrell.

Genevieve has won many top prizes in music competitions, including first prize at the Canadian Music Competition, and first prize (strings) at the 2007 National Music Festival. In 2006, she was also the youngest semi-finalist at the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition. Genevieve has performed extensively as soloist and chamber musician in Canada, and for international audiences in Italy, Greece, Spain, China, and Japan.

In 2006 she was featured as the principal character and cellist for an award winning short film directed by Alex Franchi. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and screened at numerous other festivals, including Cannes.

Genevieve is a scholarship student of Richard Aaron at The Juilliard School in NYC. Currently, she is principal of The Juilliard Orchestra. In early 2010, she was awarded a 2 year fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival. Genevieve has also been selected to participate in this year's National Arts Centre Young Artist Program.

She plays an 1815 Giovanni Baptista Ceruti cello and Lamy bow, on loan from the Canimex Foundation.

Née à Montréal en 1990, la violoncelliste canadienne Geneviève Guimond a commencé son apprentissage du violoncelle à l'âge de cinq ans. Elle a fait ses débuts orchestraux à l'âge de dix en tant que soliste avec I Musici de Montréal sous la direction de Yuli Turovsky, avec qui elle a étudié jusqu'en 2007. En 2006, elle a été la plus jeune demi-finaliste lors de la compétition internationale de violoncelle Gaspar Cassadio. Geneviève s’est produite à maintes reprises en tant que soliste et musicienne de chambre au Canada ainsi que devant des audiences internationales en Italie, en Grèce, en Espagne, en Chine et au Japon.

En 2006, elle a été mise en vedette comme personnage principal et violoncelliste pour un court métrage primé réalisé par Alex Franchi. Le film a été projeté pour la première fois au Festival International du Film de Toronto et a aussi été projeté à d'autres festivals, dont celui de Cannes.

Geneviève est une étudiante boursière sous Richard Aaron à l'école Juilliard de New York. Elle est actuellement chef de pupitre du Julliard Orchestra. Au début 2010, une bourse de deux ans lui a été attribuée dans le cadre du Aspen Music Festival. Geneviève a également été sélectionnée, cette année, pour participer au Programme des jeunes artistes du Centre national des arts.

Elle joue sur un violoncelle Giovanni Baptista Ceritu de 1815 et un archet Lamy, qui lui ont été prêtés par Canimex Foundation.

Philip Chiu

Widely acclaimed for the brilliance and sensitivity of his playing, as well as for his ability to connect with audiences, Philip Chiu has quickly established his reputation as a truly versatile artist. Second prize winner of the 2007 Bosendorfer National Piano Competition, Philip has appeared as a soloist throughout Canada, most recently at the Orford Arts Centre and for the Lindsay Concert Foundation. His orchestral debut in 2005 was Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto, with Maestra Tania Miller, as winner of The Glenn Gould School Concerto Competition.

A highly sought-after collaborative pianist, the past season included well-over 75 recitals throughout Montreal, including those for McGill University, L'Universite de Montreal, and La Chapelle Historique du Bon Pasteur - in addition to prize-winning performances for numerous national and international competitions. He also performed recently with such artists as Stefan Dohr, principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic, and trumpeters James Thompson and Jens Lindemann, and Larry Combs, former Principal Clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

A dedicated chamber musician, Philip recently completed two extensive tours: a Jeunesses Musicales tour of Eastern Canada with violinist Andrew Wan (Concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony), as well as a cross-country tour with violinist Carissa Klopoushak, sponsored by the Eckhardt-Grammate Competition. The upcoming season will include a second Canadian tour for The Fung-Chiu Duo (with duo pianist Janelle Fung), as well as concerts with violinist, Jean-Sebastien Roy.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada (Toronto and London, ON), Philip is currently based in Montreal, studying with Marc Durand and Jimmy Briere at L’Universite de Montreal. Past teachers include Jenny Regehl, Peter Longworth, and Susan Steele.

La sensibilité et la brillance de son doigté, ainsi que son habileté à se connecter avec son audience, ont doté Philip Chiu d’une réputation d’artiste versatile acclamé de tous.
